Young men with new flats, chairs for living room leather and they’re looking for furniture that will outlast them. A battered old wingback, never fails to speak up. There was a velvet sofa that went to a townhouse in Chelsea, and the sofa aged but never gave way. That’s what vintage means. They waste time with flat-pack, but they find themselves in Mayfair again.

Mass production doesn’t care, whereas old chairs carry life. This city speaks through its homes. Kensington demands velvet, with velvet chairs. Dalston experimental, unusual settees with colourful sofas. That’s what keeps us alive. I’ll tell you something else, an armchair becomes memory. You don’t get that from a catalogue. I still check the stitching for strength, and the right piece never lies. Classic pieces endure.
