Paladins have three unique features that the class gains at different levels. Curse a creature so it takes additional damage whenever you attack it and to inflict Disadvantage on Ability Checks with an Ability of your choosing. If the target dies before the spell ends, you can use a bonus action to hex a new creature.

Either way, as a Way of Shadow Monk, the most important skill proficiency to have is Stealth. So, if you go with the Outlander background, select Stealth as one of your choices. Of the remaining options, Insight should be your next pick, followed by Acrobatics or Religion (for Criminal players with Stealth already trained).
