To figure out the appropriate solar generators for camping panel capacity for your household consumption start by calculating your cumulative daily electricity consumption in watt-hours. Examine your electricity statements to track how much power your devices consume. For each device, multiply its wattage by the number of hours it operates daily. A 100W light left on for five hours consumes 500 Wh daily. Repeat this process for every appliance and add them together to get your overall daily power need.

Next, factor in the average peak sunlight hours for your geographic area. Peak sunlight hours refer to the duration when solar radiation is strong enough to generate maximum panel output. It varies by region, time of year, and weather patterns. Access it through government solar radiation maps. If your location typically sees five hours of peak sunlight your panels will operate at 100% capacity for those hours.

Take your total daily consumption and divide it by the number of peak sun hours. This gives you the minimum system wattage needed to cover your usage. For example, if you need 2,000 watt-hours daily and receive 5 peak hours divide 2000 by 5 to get 400 watts|you’ll need a 400-watt system|the calculation yields 400 watts of required output}.

Always include an extra 20–30% for real-world losses. This accounts for panel dust, dirt buildup, and shading. System losses from charge controllers, wiring, and weather variations must be factored in. If your initial estimate comes to 400W add 30% to arrive at 520 watts|increase it by 30% to get 520W|boost it to 520 watts for reliable operation}.

Finally, select solar panels whose combined wattage meets or exceeds your adjusted total. Five 100W panels will give you the necessary 500W output. Confirm your batteries are sized appropriately for daily depth-of-discharge needs. The MPPT or PWM controller should match your panel’s output specs. Have a licensed professional review your system plan. They can optimize for roof orientation, local shading, and permitting requirements.
