Couples step through the door, and they all want character. A retro armchair, gives them that. I remember selling a Chesterfield to a gentleman from St John’s Wood, and ten years on it looked better than ever. That’s what vintage means. They fall for fashion too quickly, but they always come back.

Mass production doesn’t care, whereas old chairs carry life. Furniture mirrors the postcode. Hampstead seeks calm, with velvet chairs. Shoreditch is playful, sofa with accent chair loud armchairs. That’s the reality. I’ve learnt over years, accent chairs outlive their buyers. Mass production never delivers it. I still sit to see how it feels, and the difference is clear. Old furniture lives. Next time you flick through a catalogue, stop. Take on a classic wingback, and watch it age gracefully.
