New furniture is soulless, so we begged, borrowed and carried. Someone even nabbed a table from outside a pub. Nothing matched the walls, but that’s what made it ours. Funky retro seating has character, and we care more about story than gloss. I’ve hosted ten people on one sagging retro sofa, and art deco style settees the sofa was another character in the story.

Markets spill chairs onto the streets, and designers take inspiration from it. We found ourselves in Smithers showroom, and the accent chairs were bold and weird. we had to haggle, but everyone fights to sit in it. We’ve all shoved sofas through windows. It’s part of student life. Retro sofas don’t care if you spill. Modern stuff? Forget it, but vintage carries weight. Every scratch adds more story. Once the parties are done, the broken toaster doesn’t matter, but the vintage pieces carry the whole story.

When you start student life, don’t waste time on the soulless new. Take home something with scars, and let it shout Shoreditch every time you sit.
